Product Overview
A package may look adequate after packing, but a single drop during handling can expose weak cushioning, poor package geometry or insufficient product protection.
The RS-315PW / RS-320PW Packaging Drop Tester reproduces controlled free-fall impacts on the face, edge or corner of a packaged product. With programmable height positioning and a fast-release support arm, it provides a repeatable way to evaluate packaging performance before products enter distribution.
Choose the RS-315PW for packages up to 50 kg and 1500 mm drop height, or the RS-320PW for heavier packages up to 80 kg and drop heights up to 2000 mm.

How the Package Drop Test Works
A reliable drop test is not only about how high the package falls. The package also needs to leave the support cleanly enough to preserve the intended impact orientation.
The specimen is first positioned for a face, edge or corner drop and raised to the programmed height. At release, the support arm moves rapidly downward and away from the package, minimizing interference as the package enters free fall.
After impact, inspect the package and product for damage, then reposition the specimen for the next required drop.
POSITION → ORIENT → SET HEIGHT → LIFT → RELEASE → FREE FALL → INSPECT
The spring-assisted release mechanism is specifically designed to separate rapidly from the bottom of the package without unnecessarily changing its preset drop posture.
Face, Edge or Corner?
Face Drop
Evaluates the response to a flat impact on the selected package face.
Edge Drop
Concentrates the impact along a package edge.
Corner Drop
Applies a localized impact at the selected corner.

Built for Controlled Package Drops
Face, edge and corner positioning
Adjustable supports hold the package in the required orientation before release.
≤±1 mm height positioning
Panasonic servo drive, SHIMPO planetary reducer and TBI ball screw provide precise vertical positioning.
Fast, clean release
The spring-assisted support arm retracts rapidly to minimize interference with the falling package.
Stable vertical movement
Twin precision guide columns provide smooth lifting and help reduce unwanted movement.
OMRON + Mitsubishi control
Set the drop height, view the current position and control reset, drop and lifting functions from the touchscreen.
Stable installation
A 16 mm reinforced steel base provides a rigid foundation without requiring the machine to be anchored to the laboratory floor.

The two models share the same maximum package dimensions and control architecture. The main selection difference is the required package weight and drop height.
Drop Test Standards
- ASTM D5276
- ISO 2248
- Applicable ISTA Test Procedures
- Customer-Specified Packaging Drop Test Procedures
The original equipment specification identifies the machine as intended for packaging and transport-container drop testing and states that it was designed around ASTM packaging drop-test equipment requirements.
Drop height, orientation, sequence and number of drops should be selected according to the applicable test procedure and package specification.
What Can You Evaluate?
A package drop test can tell you more than whether the carton is visibly damaged.
Package protection
Does the packaging continue to protect the product after impact?
Cushioning performance
Does the cushioning system provide enough protection for the packaged product?
Package integrity
Do the carton, closure and internal packaging remain intact after the specified drops?
Orientation sensitivity
Is the packaged product more vulnerable to a face, edge or corner impact?
The results can be used during packaging development, design verification and transport-related quality evaluation. The original specification specifically positions package drop-test results as useful input for cushioning package design.

RS-315PW or RS-320PW?
You do not need the larger model simply because the package itself is large. Start with two questions:
How heavy is the test package?
What is the highest required drop height?
| RS-315PW | RS-320PW | |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum Drop Height | 1500 mm | 2000 mm |
| Maximum Test Load | 50 kg | 80 kg |
| Maximum Sample Size | 800 × 600 × 800 mm | 800 × 600 × 800 mm |
Choose RS-315PW when:
Your package is ≤50 kg and the required drop height does not exceed 1500 mm.
Choose RS-320PW when:
Your test requires a drop height above 1500 mm or the packaged product weighs more than 50 kg, up to the machine limits of 2000 mm and 80 kg.
Configure Your Package Drop Test
Before recommending a machine, we normally need to know the package—not just the standard number.
| Tell Us | Example |
|---|---|
| Package Size | L × W × H |
| Test Weight | Package + product |
| Drop Height | mm |
| Impact Orientation | Face / Edge / Corner |
| Drop Sequence | Required order |
| Number of Drops | Per specimen |
| Test Standard | ASTM / ISO / ISTA / Internal procedure |
If you already have a customer test specification, send it with the inquiry. We can check the required height, load, orientation and machine configuration before quotation.
Request a Configuration & Quotation
Send us your package dimensions, test weight, required drop height, impact orientations and test procedure.
ITM-LAB will recommend the appropriate RS-315PW or RS-320PW configuration.
Can the same machine perform face, edge and corner drops?
Yes. The package support arrangement is designed to position the specimen for all three orientations.
Will the support arm change the package orientation when it releases?
The release mechanism is designed to move rapidly downward and away from the package. Its purpose is to minimize interference with the preset orientation as free fall begins.
We only need a 1200 mm drop. Which model should we choose?
Drop height alone is not enough to decide. If the package is also within the 50 kg limit, the RS-315PW would normally cover a 1200 mm requirement. Package dimensions and the complete test procedure should still be checked before final selection.
Does the tester need to be bolted to the floor?
According to the standard machine specification, no. The machine uses a 16 mm reinforced steel base plate to provide a stable installation without ground anchoring.
Can you check our test standard before we select a model?
Yes. Send the standard or your customer's test procedure together with the package dimensions and test weight. We can compare the required drop conditions with the machine configuration before quotation.
